Way of the Samurai is for people drawn to the samurai tradition who want more than performance, myth, or borrowed identity. Here you’ll find grounded guidance on samurai history, authentic koryu martial arts, swords, culture, and philosophy - all shaped by our quest to cultivate the "Discipline of Presence": learning to regulate yourself, see clearly, and act with dignity under pressure.
Whether you’re new to this path or deepening an existing practice, this site will help you explore these traditions with more substance, clarity, and purpose.

I’m Paul 'Batman' O’Brien, an instructor in Iaido and Jodo, and dojo leader for Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu in Ireland. I created Way of the Samurai for people who want more than the fantasy narrative, the performative cosplay, or borrowed identity - a place to explore authentic koryu bujutsu, samurai history, swords, and philosophy through what I call the Discipline of Presence - how to apply the principles, strategies and philosophies found in genuine samurai arts to the stuggles of daily life, to regulate yourself, see clearly, and act with dignity under pressure.
If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re in the right place.
If you’re drawn to the samurai tradition and want something deeper than myth, performative martial arts, or dodgy cults, start by exploring the core paths through this site. Each section will help you study the tradition with more clarity, substance, and presence.
